Boy Birthday Card by Tonya Gibbs

Hi everyone, I hope you are having a great week.  My favorite part of Marion's designs are all the little tiny elements that you can fussy cut and cluster together.  Today's project was inspired by the layout I made for yesterday's post.  

 

I used a  few of the same techniques, but this time, I took elements from Marion's Nirvana collection, and the Texture stamps from Marion's latest release to create the mixed media background boy card. 

 

 

 

Here is how I did the background for this card. 

I started with a piece of cardstock, and spread modeling paste or gesso using your favorite stencil. Allow it to dry completely.

 

Using a Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Pitt Artist Pen - carefully rub some of the ink onto the stenciled area. Try to avoid direct contact with the cardstock.  Do a small section then go to next step.

 

 

Using your finger rub the Pitt Pen Ink to blend, allow some of the ink to spill over the cardstock.

 

 

 

Archival ink was used around the edges to further distress the background.

 

I used a green Pitt Artist Pen directly on my stamps then stamped it onto my background paper.   These pens are temporary blendable ink on a prepped surface as seen on the hexagons.  However, when used on a non-prepped surface they offer a permanent ink solution. 

 

 

Pick a brown watercolor shimmer mist (I used Gossamer Gold by Lindy's Stamp Gang), and spray onto a non-porous surface. I used recycled packaging for my pallet.

 

 

 Use a circular item and stamp the bottom into the ink, then apply it to your project. 

 

 

 

 

The grungy effects give this background and instant masculine feel.   All I have to do now is build out my layers.  In addition to Marion's ephemera, I've also included a chipboard #2, sentiment, twine, and puzzle pieces.

Rainy Days of Summer by Tonya Gibbs

Hey everyone, I bet some of you are ready for a little sunshine.  I know I am!   I was thumbing through some old Facebook photos and ran across this photo of my nephew Cooper when he was about 3 years old.  My sister-in law had taken them to the park to play in the rain, and captured the perfect photo collection!  So fun.  I wanted my layout to mimic the fun times shared during this photo shoot.  

 

 

 

 

 

Marion's Never Grow Up Collection is perfect for this Rainy Days of Summer layout! It is full of playful images and vibrant colors.  I love that this collection can be masculine and feminine.   Here is a sample of the products that I used from Marion's lines.

 

 

 

I used my Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Pitt Artist Pens on the texture stamps from Marion's winter release,  to add depth and texture to the plain cardstock.   Pitt pens are made with India ink and have a slow dry time on a prepped surface allowing for blending. However, on a non-prep surface they make an awesome permanent ink solution!  

 

 

 

 

I added splashes of aqua watercolor paint to mimic that rainy day, and ground my photo to the layout.  Lots of yummy ephemera were cut from the collection to give the layout that "all boy" feel.   The journaling spot was a scrap from Marion's Digi line!  Here is a glimpse at the final layout!

 

 

I just love how playful this layout is.  These colors remind me of how vibrant it is in the summer just  after a rain shower.

Embellishment Tutorial Part 2 by Tonya Gibbs

Hi everyone, I hope your weekend is off to a great start. A few weeks ago I shared with you a project on making wooden ticket embellishments that coordinate with your paper collections.  Today I want to share with you another idea for embellishing your projects. 

 



 

 

Remember playing with Shrink plastic when you were kid?  I think I made charms in Vacation Bible School for 5 straight years (LOL).  Well here is a grown up project you can make using Marion's super awesome Curious Stamp Set.

I started with Poly Shrink Plastic by the Lucky Squirrel. You can use any brand just make sure it is clear if you want your roses to appear like glass. 

 

 

I used the rose & butterfly stamps from the from the Curios set. Stamp them using a permanent ink like Staz-on, or Archival Jet Black Ink from Ranger.

 

 

 

On the OPPOSITE side that you stamped, color the image with a permanent marker. Don't color on the side that you stamped or it will ruin your marker nib.  I used my Copic markers, but no need to worry about shading. The color becomes concentrated when they shrink, so the shading disappears.

 

 

Cut out your Shape.  Remove all negative space, but make sure you keep a thick border in the delicate stem area.   Here is what my Rose looks like when I cut it out. Notice that I colored outside the lines and made my stems a bit thicker.

 

 

Now grab a pair of tweezers, a heat source and start shrinking.  (The plastic will curl as it shrinks, but no worries, keep shrinking it will straighten out). 

 

 

The image shrinks to a 1/3 of the original size.  Once the image is cool enough to touch, I molded the leaves to give them some interest.

 

  

 

Use Glossy Accents or E6000 to adhere the charms to your projects. 

 

 

To show you how beautiful they are on a project,  I created this layout of my amazing parents using Marion's Garment District collection.  I love how tiny the butterflies turned out, and think the roses appear like glass and offer a nice touch of elegance to the layout.

Secret Crush Card by Tonya Gibbs

Today I wanted to share with you a card from the Pink Paislee's Secret Crush collection. This collection was so hot last year.  I made several projects with it last year, and just have a few pieces left over.  My goal this year is to purge some of these odds and ends pieces. 

 

The card size is 3.5 inches by 8.5 inches so it fits nicely in a standard #10 envelope.  For my card background I used the Endless Love paper as my background. The layered doilies printed on this paper are "hoard vault" quality, but they must be used!  Then I trimmed a piece of scrap from the Polka Dance paper to make a fish tail banner for the base of my layers.

 

 

I used the hearts from the ephemera pack, tissue tape, and flat back pearls to create a banner at the top.  I think the banner offers a romantic feel to the card. Another Doily, and a few tickets from the ephemera pack were used for my layers, and the cluster was finished off with the Harlow Prima Rose.  I used left over chipboard letters to form the XO that is synonymous Valentine's Day. 

 

 

On the inside, I layered scraps from the papers for my signature area. The list of love words from the paper and the Tim Holtz Typewriter at the bottom finished off the right side of the card.   I love when things stick outside of the margins, and the "be mine" tab from the collection added a bit of interest and is seen when the card is closed.  The sticker at the bottom is from the sticker pack, and offered the perfect final touch.

 

 

 

My goal this year is to share with you ways to "destash" your older collections before they are so dated that you don't want to use them.  A lot of scraps and left overs from this collection were used in this card design.  Even though the collection was released last year, it's color pallet and iconic images make it timeless.

December Daily Days 24 - 31 by Tonya Gibbs

Happy New Year everyone, I hope you had a Merry Christmas!   I'm so excited that I finished my December Daily Journal, and can share with you the completed project today.  

Day 24
I spent the day with my Niece Amber and then had dinner with my In laws

Day 25 - Christmas Day.  

Prompt 1:  Focus on that 1 special gift that was given that day, and tell the story.    Christmas day there are so many photos taken that it can be overwhelming to include them all.  So I focused on 1 special gift that was given by my Son to his Father.   I told the story on the tag and slipped it behind the photos. 

Days 26 - 27   We went to the Smoky Mountains on vacation, so I decided to simply add photos.  To keep the clutter down, I did a cluster of my favs on 1 4x6 for each day, and slipped them into a photo sleeve.    The story is told on the tag that is slipped between the two photos.

 

 

Note:   I had some people ask how I make my photo grids on my 4x6 prints.  There are several ways to do it, this was done in Photoshop where each photo is its own layer and sized to the correct grid size. If you are using photos from your phone you can use an app called Photo Grid then send then print you photo.  You can also use collage print from a lot of online photo services, chose the 4x6 paper size and the photos you want on that photo and the service will arrange them for you.

Day 28 -  Road trip home.  I had to document my lunch this day.

Day 29 -  Puppy and I hung out and did laundry.  Just not a very exciting day!

Day 30   I spent the day with my Mom and my Sister.   We had a great time shopping, and then Mom decided to eat this huge thing of cotton candy by herself.  Well, I thought it would make the perfect photo for the day!  

Day 31 -  the final day of the year.  Well, again, I did nothing really.  I wanted to spend time with Ginger and try and get her crate trained.  Then,  later that evening, I Skyped with my friend Annmarie to finish up my December Daily

Back Cover -   I decided to give a "year in review of 2013" on my back cover.  I used one of the journal pages in the collection and wrote down all my blessings from 2013.  I think it is a good way to document the year and say hello to the new year.  Next year it will be fun to look back and see the growth in our family.

December Daily Days 20 - 23 by Tonya Gibbs

Hi everyone I hope you guys had an amazing Christmas.  Today is my Birthday and my hubby swept me away to the Smoky Mountains around 4 p.m. on Christmas Day.  So my post this week will be a bit light.   I only have days 20 - 23 to share.  I will post 24 - 27 early next week when I return. In addition to the Photo shares I've also prepared a few prompts for you on days when you need a little inspiration. 


Day 20

 

Cooper hung out with me that day while his Mom & Dad were out of town, and he made this card for his momma.  So sweet! 

 

 

 

 

Day 21

Prompt:  Highlight a favorite recipe that you prepare during the holidays. 

 

The journaling for this page was done on the back of the recipe card.

 

 

Day 22

Prompt 2:  Just journal!   I did nothing on day 22 nothing zip nada.  I barely got out of  bed.  I was so tired from having Cooper, Bella, and Trey over that I decided to use a photo from the day before and just journal about the day!

 

Day 23

Prompt 3:  Do Selfies on shopping excursions.  

Brittany and I went shopping on the 23 to finish up our holiday shopping.  Then later that evening we got this cute little puppy.  She hasn't been named yet, but I thought she deserved a page all to herself!

Stocking Gift Card Holder by Tonya Gibbs

Hi everyone, just a few more days until Christmas, and time for me to start my wrapping.   Today, I  wanted to share with you a little gift card holder I made using Marion Smith's Nirvana and Mad Tea Party collection.

 

 

For the stocking I used the Bliss page from the Nirvana Collection.

 

 

Then I used the Tim Holtz Poinsettia die and cut the b-side of the Alice Paper to make the flower.  I have a tutorial on my YouTube channel that shows how to make the flower.

 

 

 

 

 I used the Typograph stamp to personalize the gift tag.  

 

 

 

The flower actually holds the flap down when the stocking is closed.

 

 

I love how elegant this gift card holder looks.  I think it would also be super cute for a baby shower.   The stocking shape is a cut file in the Silhouette store by Lori Whitlock.
